Approaching car challenge
Watch the car drive towards you. When it stops at the 20-metre point, read its number plate. Every round is a new car and a new registration.
1. Set up your screen
Sit or stand at a measured distance from your screen and choose it below. At 100% browser zoom, hold a standard bank card against the screen and match the blue card’s width to it. Wear the glasses or contact lenses you drive with.
At the right scale a whole car is big, so on smaller screens you’ll only see the middle of it. The number plate always stays in view. Recalibrate after changing the zoom or turning your device.
Move back before playing: if you choose 3 metres, watch the stopped car from 3 metres away, not from your usual seat. Otherwise it will look much bigger than a car 20 metres away.

3. Check a real car
In good daylight, measure 20 metres from the number plate of a parked car with a modern UK registration and read the whole registration, wearing any glasses or contact lenses you need for driving. This real check is the best preparation for test day.
This game is practice only. Your screen size, pixel density, fonts and lighting all change how the plate looks, so it can’t tell you whether you meet the legal eyesight standard. If you find it hard or you’re unsure, see an optician before your test.
